Complete Guide to the Hot New Video Games for 2010 Holiday Season

As you gear up for the best gifts for the 2010 holiday season, the following guide gives you a list of the hottest new video games that will surely delight any game lover!

Call of Duty: Black Ops

This shoot-'em-up offers a Cold War story with missions ranging from an attempt on Fidel Castro's life to one in Vietnam, where the protagonist is sent to look for evidence of a Soviet presence. Or something like that.

Many of this game's biggest fans will ignore that solo-player story line in favor of going online and blowing up friends and strangers with its exhaustive arsenal of virtual shotguns and sniper rifles.

Rated M; Xbox 360, PS3, Wii.

Check here for online customer reviews and price.

Halo: Reach

The latest installment of this famous sci-fi franchise pits a group of space marines against an alien force known as the Covenant. Chronologically speaking, the story told in this entry takes place before the events of the original hit Xbox game, released in 2001. To the casual fan, the opponents and the weapons featured here might seem familiar, but there's no doubt that this title's visual elements got an extra coat of polish this year.

Rated M; Xbox 360.

Fallout: New Vegas

In 2009, "Fallout" players explored a radioactive and bombed-out version of Washington; this year's release tells a tale set in the Las Vegas area. There are nearly endless ways to unravel the stories offered in this gloomy world, which is filled with violent gangs and irradiated ghouls. Fun fact: A Rockville-based game company publishes this title.

Rated M; Xbox 360, PS3

Fable III

In this generally lighthearted adventure story, it's the player's job to unite rival factions to take down a king who has turned tyrannical. Once that mission is accomplished, a powerful enemy draws near and it's the player's turn to decide how to run the realm of Albion. Do you keep your campaign promises, or do you break them to build the kingdom's army?

Rated M; Xbox 360

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood

The thrills offered in this historical adventure come, largely, from scaling walls and hiding out on the rooftops of 16th-century Rome between assassination missions. The main protagonist, a fellow named Ezio, is on a mission to take down a pesky group of Templars in the Eternal City. Fortunately, Ezio has Leonardo da Vinci on his side, and the inventor provides nifty gadgets and toys.

Rated M; Xbox 360, PS3

Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit

Even the police officers drive Lamborghinis in virtual Seacrest County, where illegal street racing appears to be the main pastime. This is a game spent behind the wheel: Players get to take on roles as cops or, alternately, as the racers trying to evade the law.

Rated E10+; Xbox 360, PS3, Wii

Rock Band 3

The most notable addition to this year's installment of the popular rhythm game: a keyboard! Designed to be played on a lap or slung over a fake rocker's shoulder, the new controller features two octaves' worth of keys, good for playing along on songs like Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody."

Rated T; Xbox 360, PS3, Wii

Click here for customer reviews and pricing.

Super Mario Galaxy 2

Mario explores the cosmos again, jumping from one colorful planetoid to the next and landing on the noggins of a familiar group of foes. This title was released earlier this year, but if the kids were in summer camp, now might be the time to circle back and grab a copy.

Rated E; Wii

Kirby's Epic Yarn

An evil wizard has transformed a classic Nintendo character into yarn, in a game title that looks like it was designed in an arts and crafts store. Things could be worse for Kirby, however; his new status in the material world grants him the ability to turn into race cars or a parachute, also made of yarn. This cute and family-friendly title has won thumbs-ups from critics young and not-so-young.

Rated E; Wii

Epic Mickey

Mickey Mouse is pulled into a dark world known as the Wasteland in this upcoming adventure title, which reportedly showcases a slightly edgier version of the iconic character. Armed with a magical paintbrush that can bring color into this dark world, Mickey's job is to defeat a vintage Disney bad guy known as the Blot. This game is scheduled for release Tuesday and has already won buzz as a hot title for the Wii this holiday season.

E-book Readers

The best deal will demand an early morning. Early-birds at Best Buy can save about $50 on the Nook Wi-Fi , which is selling at $99.99 rather than its usual price of $150.

32-Inch LCD TVs

There are a number of deals on 32-inch LCDs. So far, the cheapest we've seen is the Emerson 720p set at Walmart (model LC320EM1) priced at $198.

50-Inch or Larger TVs

Walmart will be also breaking the $500 barrier for a 50-inch plasma with a $498 price on a Sanyo 720p set (DP50740); its regular retail price is $650.

SLR Cameras

Best Buy is offering a package that bundles our highly Rated Canon EOS Rebel T2i with two lenses (18-55mm and 55-250mm zooms) and accessories (an 8GB SDHC memory card and camera bag), for just under $1000. The bundled lenses are a plus: With an SLR generally, the more lenses you have, the better.

Point-and-Shoot Cameras

If you're shopping for a child or teen, Staples is selling the rugged Olympus Stylus Tough-3000 for $150 (originally $210). Since it's waterproof and shockproof, it should be able to withstand some common mishaps.

Camcorders

Among pocket models, Best Buy and Amazon has a Flip Video UltraHD "package", which includes a few accessories along with the cam, such as an extra battery pack and bag, for $120 (originally around $200, without any accessories). Printers

For an all-in-one printer that can scan, copy and fax, the HP OfficeJet 6500 Wireless is reasonably fast, quite economical and one of just a handful of inkjets that printed excellent-quality text when we tested it. Staples has it on sale for $79.98 (regular price: $199.98).

Digital Photo Frames

Amazon has the Pandigital PAN7000DW 6.9-inch frame on sale for $39.99, regularly $59.99. The frame has a gigabyte of memory, and an optional Wi-Fi adapter lets you get photos from your computer and specific photo-sharing sites.

BestBuy's Black Friday Phone Deals

We've already seen the carriers step up with some great Black Friday deals, but you know that Best Buy isn't going to stand by and have all of the fun. There will be some deals to be had at Best Buy for just about anyone in the market for a new cell phone, so let's start with the smartphones.

First up, both the HTC DROID Incredible and Samsung Fascinate for Verizon will be available for just $1 with a two-year contract, which is pretty incredible (Zing!) when you remember that they normally retail for $149.99 and $199.99, respectively. Both Verizon and Sprint's Galaxy Tabs will be available for $549.99, a $50 savings, while Sprint's LG Optimus S will be on sale for the low, low price of $0 on contract and the Samsung Transform will set you back $70 and include a free accessory pack. Finally, the BlackBerry Torch for AT&T will have its price cut to only $49.99 on contact, a $50 savings.

If you're not in the mood for a smartphone, there will also be some feature phones on sale at Best Buy, like the Samsung Intensity II for Verizon, which will be free on contract and include a free accessory set, too. The Pantech Laser, will be available for free on contract, as well. Rounding out the messaging phones, Best Buy has the LG Rumor Touch for Virgin Mobile at $69.99, the Samsung Rant in red on Boost Mobile for $49.99, and the LG Prime AT&T GoPhone for $59.99. There will also be some accessories on sale, like Rocketfish iPhone 4 cases for $9.99 apiece and a Plantronics Voyager Pro Bluetooth headset for $49.99.

BlackBerry Curve 8539 Drops to $200, NO Contract

If you are in the market shopping for a blackberry, Boost Mobile just dropped Blackberry curve 8530 to $199.99. Still sounds expensive? Remember, you pay only $60 a month for unlimited text, talk, and data, and, most importantly, there is no contract!

Netflix - Just In Time for Your Holiday Watching - At Home

Based on Wall Street Journal report - Netflix Inc. launched its first Internet-only subscription plan in the U.S. and raised prices for DVD-by-mail plans, continuing its shift from a DVD-rental business to an online video service.

The company, which says its customers now use its Web-streaming service more than its by-mail rentals, will charge $7.99 a month for customers that only want to watch online.

"We are now primarily a streaming-video company delivering a wide selection of TV shows and films over the Internet," Netflix Chief Executive Reed Hastings said.

Netflix shares jumped 8.8% to $188.32 Monday on the Nasdaq Stock Market.

The new service and the DVD price increases indicate the company wants to foster use of online streaming and discourage use of the by-mail rentals. The price increases are higher for plans that involve larger numbers of DVDs out at one time.

Google TV - A Deal to Consider This Holiday Season

This holiday season, a host of products have been rolled out to take advantage of the biggest selling season of the year. Sony has several family devices on the market including televisions ranging from 24 inches to 46 inches as well as a Blu-ray player, and Logitech has introduced a digital media adaptor called the Revue ready for purchase.

While any number of consumer devices have access to streaming media – these days, virtually every Blu-ray player, video game console and television comes with Netflix, YouTube and other ways of accessing the Internet – GoogleTv makes the Internet an integral part of the viewing experience rather than something that is just bolted onto an existing platform.

More importantly, GoogleTV and other newly hatched digital media players such as AppleTV and the Boxee Box make the idea of consumers “cutting the cord,” or dropping their paid broadcast TV subscriptions, increasingly possible.

While that world does not exist currently for most consumers, the GoogleTV devices now sitting on the shelf at retailers bring it at least a little closer.

Prepaid Broadband For Only $20 a Month

That is from Virgin Mobile, and is only available from Walmart.

If you are in the market looking for a broadband card, and you are not a frequent user, no need to lock yourself up in an expensive postpaid plan.

Go to Walmart and get a Virgin Mobile broadband plan for only $20 a month.

That is perfect for iPad or Tablet users who typically consume about 1Gb data a month. Any unlimited plan is a waste of money.

It facilitates borrowing (vs. buying) goods from someone you can trust, of course with a small cost.

If you do a Google search, you can find more similiar websites that facilitates such transactions.

Holiday Deal Traps

This holiday season, online and offline retailers will place various traps to lure consumers to open up their wallets. Do not fall into the following traps:

1. Buy anything today, save 50% next week on any purchase
Most "smart" consumer will think, ok, I will buy just one today, and buy 5 items next week to get 50% discount. Well, you already fell into the trap. The reason the 50% discount next week is the retailers will have new items become available next week at full price, and they are waiting for trapped people like you.

2. Limit 2 per person
Ok, if I buy one, I will miss the boat, because it's obvious the store doesn't want people to buy more than one. Most people will think so and naturally fall into the trap. In fact, research has shown that with this trick in place, some items that only a crazy person will buy more than one will see a large number of people buy 2.

3. Sale will end by 6pm tonight
Yes, buy while you are in the trap shopping.

4. Sale with 21% discount
Wow, it's more than 20% discount, as most consumers are fixed with integers in their mind, they will feel they are getting a great deal with a 21% discount.

5. Save $300 if you buy now
Some retailers will highlight the huge amount of savings, so consumers will forget how much it will actually cost (i.e. $999).

6. Buy $25 and get a free gift
Who doesn't like a gift, and it's FREE. If your originally planned purchase won't exceed $25, don't raise it just to get that free gift.

The Best Affordable DSLR Camera This Holiday Season

If you are looking for the best affordable DSLR on the market, no need for further research, Canon Rebel XS 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens is absolutely better than Olympus E-510 or Nikon D40/60.

The next question is, where can you get the best Canon DSLR deal?

Based on leaked Black Friday deal info, Walmart and Sears both have it for $479, but after adding tax to it, your total take home price will be $500+, plus you have to compete with those early birds (3am? 2am? or even earlier?) to be the first group getting into the crowded Walmart or Sears retail stores.

Amazon's regular price was $650 which was not attractive at all. However, now it's only $499, making it instantly the best DSLR deal for this Black Friday. I have grabed one today, do you still need more research? Read Amazon's product reviews will help you make up your mind.

HTC EVO 4G For Only $100 and NO Shipping

Anywhere you go, this solid 4G phone for Sprint's service is at least $199.99 with a contract or $499.

But for a limited time only, Amazon is offering it at $499.99-$400 = $99.99.

Get a Free Peel 520 - Better than ZTE Peel

A Nevada corporation and a U.S. Registered & Reporting SEC filer, GoSolarUSA is trying to outline the key differences between its own product, the Apple Peel 520, and Sprint’s ZTE PEEL.

The company begins with a few notes on the features of the ZTE PEEL, saying it is designed to give iPod Touch users “anywhere, anytime” access to the Internet via Sprint’s 3G network.

Citing Sprint, GoSolarUSA adds that the ZTE PEEL hardware that encapsulates the iPod touch costs $79.99 and the data plan is $29.99 per month with a 1 GB limit.

Since it’s also Wi-Fi compatible, the device can also serve as a mobile hotspot, allowing users to make calls using VoIP. However, GoSolarUSA claims that, to use this feature with the ZTE PEEL, purchasing additional hardware is necessary.

By comparison, the Peel 520 provides iPod touch users with “the ability to place voice calls and text messages over mobile phone networks, turning the media player into a powerful smartphone.”

Tyson Rohde, GSLO President and CEO, said that the Peel 520 is currently being prepared for its retail debut in the United States.

“Given the similar name of ZTE’s device, it’s understandable that some iPod Touch users may be confused as to its use,” Rohde said. “We want to make it clear that GSLO’s Peel 520 is still on track to be first-to-market in the U.S. for adding smartphone capabilities to the iPod Touch utilizing mobile phone networks.”

“After fielding inquiries from numerous American retailers about the Peel 520 and witnessing demand first-hand in China, it’s no surprise to us that a tremendous market exists for quality iPod Touch accessories,” he added.

“The iPod Touch is more than a simple media player: It’s a powerful pocket computer. iPod Touch users the world over are primed and ready to explore the full potential of their devices with the help of accessories such as the Peel 520,” Rohde concluded.

GoSolarUSA also said that their Peel 520 is being courted by major mobile network operators. The actual makers of the hardware, the China-based Yosion, has been in discussions concerning a potential joint venture with China Mobile, GoSolarUSA said.

US residents eager to be among the first to acquire an Apple Peel 520 can sign up for the waiting list here.

Turn iPod Touch Into a Real Phone - ZTE Peel

Thanks to the wonder that is Voice over Internet Protocol, better known as VoIP, people have long been able to make phone calls from computers or, say, an iPod Touch.

But a new iPhone case with a built-in 3G-to-Wi-Fi hot spot comes closest yet to turning an iPod Touch into a real phone. The case, called the ZTE Peel, wraps around a second- or third-generation iPod Touch to connect it to Sprint's 3G data service.

That means that by using a VoIP application, you can make phone calls on the move just as you can from a mobile phone.

You can also use it to connect a fourth-generation iPod Touch to the Internet just by having the Wi-Fi hot spot case nearby, but it will not snugly fit the fourth-generation Touch.

Two devices can connect to the Peel at a time, so you can also use it to connect a Windows or Macintosh computer to the Internet at the same time you are using your faux phone.

The Peel, which becomes available on Sunday, will retail for $80 through Sprint online. It will also require a $30 monthly service plan, which allows for 1 GB of data. That is about the equivalent of one hour of YouTube streaming, 250 Facebook uploads or 5,000 one-page e-mails.

When AT&T offered tiered data packages last June, Skype estimated that one minute of VoIP over 3G would use about 0.345 MB of data. So according to Skype, 1 GB of data should be about 2900 minutes of VoIP voice calls. That's for a $30 a month fee. If the Peel works as promised ... bargain!

Whether or not it's as good a deal as buying an iPhone depends on whether you already have an iPod or not. A 32 GB iPod Touch costs $299, the same as the 32 GB iPhone 4.

Comparing the cost of plans with the iPhone 4, still available only through AT&T, you would have to have a voice plan the costs $40 to $70 a month, a data plan that costs $15 to $45 a month, and there's an optional messaging plan that costs $5 to $20 a month. The low total would be $55 a month for talk and data with no texting.

The Peel-iPod-Sprint plan combo is less expensive, but until we know how much talk you get, it's premature to call it a bargain. If you need a phone, I suspect you'll still be better off with the proper iPhone. I'll know more after testing the Peel in a week or so. If you just want to add a phonelike feature at a moderate price, the Peel might appeal.
