Could a $35 toaster be better than a $100 toaster?

Here is a proof that good deal does exist, but it takes discovery ...

Based on this Financehubs.com post, you could spend $100 on a DeLonghi DTT312 toaster which is good, but you could also just spend $35 on a Hamilton Beach Digital 22502 toaster which is even better!

How to Save on Wireless Call Expenses

Two ways:

a. Use the carrier endorsed Skype app
For example, when you use Verizon Skype app, you can make Skype-to-Skype calls without deducting minutes from your voice service plan. And you can make inexpensive international Skype Out calls with rates starting around 2 cents a minute.

b. Download Skype over Wi-Fi on your own
The carrier provided Skype only works on its network. But the Skype over Wi-Fi enables you to bypass the wireless phone network when making phone calls. This is especially important when you travel overseas, by using Skype over Wi-Fi, you can save hefty roaming charges.

Samsung Galaxy Tab Under $300

If you have been waiting for that magic number: below $300, you got it.

Sprint has lowered the Samsung Galaxy Tab price down to $299 (with a 2 year contract, of course). This really meets lots of people's expectations on price level.

What makes the Galaxy Tab different from the smartphone you already have? The screen size!

The leap from 4 inches to 7 inches makes the difference between squinting to see content and being able to relax and actually enjoy a video wherever you go. I use iPad, but despite it's gorgeous and sleek, it's just too heavy to put into a pocket and carry around with me wherever I go. However, I just can't complain its 10 inches screen size whenever I use it, although its price really sets me back a bit compared with the under $300 Samsung Galaxy Tab.

Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother

This is a brief review of the book "Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother" by Amy Chua.

Are Chinese parents better at raising children than Western ones? Have you ever threatened to burn your child's stuffed animals if he or she doesn't improve piano playing? Do you believe in nothing is fun until you are good at it? Do you intervene your child's project and demand a better one before bringing to the school? Do you have children at home laboring over violin, piano, math, books and you feel gratifying? Do you believe in hard work produces accomplishment which leads to confidence and yet more accomplishment?

Most importantly, does becoming super-accomplished make up for years of stress?

Whether you are a believer or disbeliever of the above theories, as a parent, you will find the book by Amy Chua (a professor at Yale and has a Jewish husband who plays a secondary role in rearing the children) very interesting and informative to read. Once you pick it up, you just can't stop reading it, and more than likely you will stop your spouse as you will find many things to share with him or her.

The book just came to the market and has both hardcover and kindle versions available at Amazon for less than $15.

You Need to Try Robotics Mint

Although as a cheapskate, I will recommend you cleaning your room by yourself, rather than relying on a robot. But, if your time is more valuable, the Evolutionary Robotics Mint is a must. Roomba or Neato XV? That's too yestyear!

Why, the Rob Mint has several standout features:

a. It really knows which areas of the room have been cleaned, which areas need extra efforts and it will really do it, energetically!

b. It can avoid those traps such as stairways intelligently, try it yourself!

c. It will leave your floor drier even than you mop it yourself!

d. It's very quiet.

e. It has a long battery life to keep it working, and can turn off by itself when it's done.

f. Most importantly, it really works in terms of cleaning a room, especially a really dirty place, just leave it to Rob Mint.

g. Oh, unlike some other gadgets, it's just foolproof to use, very easy to read instruction and get it going.

The only drawback? It will set you back for $200 at Amazon. Not sure you can get it cheaper anywhere else.

The smart way to shop mobile devices

If you are looking for a new phone or a tablet, the smart way to shop nowadays is not to go to the carrier store, instead, do the following:

a. Visit the retail stores such as RadioShack, BestBuy, or Walmart. They offer almost all carriers' phones and other mobile devices side by side. This is very important, not price per se, but so you can feel and touch the different phones, it's especially important for people who want to compare iPad and Galaxy Tab.

b. When you are done your research, jog down the price point, don't reach to your wallet yet. Instead, go home and hit the web, typically web retailers with their lower overhead costs, can afford better prices, and no tax and shipping cost, for the same item at the brick and motar stores.

Worried about customer service and return service? That's the reason you want to shop at reputible etailers such as Amazon only.

Hello 2011

Did you make your new year's resolution? I made mine -

Research more deals, post more blogposts, and get more readers!

In fact, I am pretty confident I already secured the "get more readers" part, as I recently became a moderator of a young forum - FinanceHubs.com, I want to do a little commercial for it - it has tons of subforums that literally cover all aspects of our daily lives, such as how to get more pay on your job, how to make a little more on your side business, how to save on home maintenance, how to get the best credit card deals, how to save for child's college, how to become a landlord, how to invest, how to ... you name it.

Put simply, it's goal is to let ordinary people like us share our wisdoms so together we can make more and save more! Sounds a noble goal to me!

They are still recruiting moderators, I will encourage you give it a try as well!

Good luck in 2011!
